When to See a Doctor for Your Foot Injury

Experiencing a Foot Injury and unsure of when to have a doctor look at it? Foot injuries can be extremely difficult because the feet are responsible for so much. Having an injured foot can often limit a person’s ability to walk or even stand, which is why it is so important to have a doctor examine and evaluate. Patients wondering when to see a doctor for an injured foot may find this information to be useful. There are a few indicators that a patient should go to see the doctor. It is important to be aware of this information so that those with injuries do not wait too long before seeking help.

GETTING A FOOT INJURY CHECKED BY A DOCTOR

To avoid complications, patients with a foot injury should watch for the following signs and make an appointment with a doctor when needed.

SEVERE PAIN

Foot injuries, like most injuries, can induce some degree of pain, but if it becomes severe then a podiatrist needs to address it. Severe pain may indicate a fracture or internal problems such as a shattered bone or nerve damage. It is better to be safe than sorry. Many injuries must be treated carefully so that further damage is not done.

LOSS OF FUNCTIONALITY

Sometimes, an initial foot injury may impair someone for a few days. A sprained ankle or stubbed toes may make it difficult to walk, just as a cut or burn could make the foot or skin painful to touch. If the loss of functionality continues on for more than a couple of days, however, then a doctor should examine the injury. The feet are responsible for a lot, so when they are not functioning, it is critical to understand why.

NUMBNESS

An initial foot injury may cause some numbness, but it should not last. It is abnormal to not have sensation in any area of the foot. If the toes, heel, or arch of the foot are numb, then it is recommended to schedule a visit to the doctor’s office immediately. Numbness can indicate nerve damage, which can have a number of causes and often requires treatment.

DELAYED HEALING

If a foot injury is not showing any signs of healing, then it may be time to see a podiatrist. Most foot injuries, such as a stubbed toe, sprained ankle or minor cut, should show signs of healing within a couple of days. Pain should subside and functionality should be gained. If this has not occurred, then there might be something more going on.
