Foot Doctor: Potential Signs of Lower Leg Issues

If you suspect you have lower leg issues, you should visit a foot doctor as soon as possible. You may not know how important your feet are until you develop serious foot problems. Daily routines may then become difficult and you may not be able to take part in many enjoyable activities. However, proper detection, intervention and care can ensure that most foot and ankle problems are prevented or treated before they become worse.

FOOT DOCTOR AND LOWER LEG PROBLEMS

A person’s lower leg includes basically everything between the knee and ankle. The lower leg has several compartments and each one includes several muscles and an artery, nerve and vein. There are various signs that may indicate that someone has lower leg problems. Some of the common ones include pain and swelling.

PAIN

Leg pain can result from overuse and wear and tear. It can also be experienced due to injuries in joints or bones or in tendons, ligaments, muscles or other soft tissues. Some of the common causes of leg pain include tendinitis, muscle cramp, shin splints, broken bones or sprains, blood clots and peripheral artery disease. Scheduling an office visit is recommended if a person has pain during or after walking, the pain gets worse or symptoms do not improve after several days of home treatment.

A person who has signs of infection like redness, tenderness or warmth or a swollen leg that is unusually cool or pale should see a doctor as soon as possible. Seeing a doctor is also ideal if a person has any serious leg symptoms that develop for no particular reason or feels pain in the calf, especially after sitting for a long time. In some cases, a person should call for immediate medical help or go to an emergency room. This is recommended when a person has a leg injury with an exposed tendon or bone or a deep cut or is not able to walk or put weight on the leg.

SWELLING

Leg swelling can occur in different parts of the legs, including the ankles, calves and feet. Leg swelling can be either due to inflammation or fluid buildup. Inflammation occurs mostly when the tissues in the legs become irritated and swollen. It is a natural response when a person breaks a bone or tears a ligament or tendon. Some of the factors that can contribute to leg inflammation include rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, a broken foot, sprained ankle or broken leg. A person should not ignore leg swelling because it can be a sign of a serious problem. If a person notices other symptoms like leg pain, seeing the doctor right away is advisable.

VISIT A FOOT DOCTOR

You should always take proper care of your legs. You should watch out for any signs and symptoms of lower leg issues such as swelling and pain. Seeking medical attention is sometimes necessary to ensure that problems can be addressed early. If you suspect you have any lower leg issue, talk to a foot doctor.
