Common Ankle Issues

Most people tend to forget that the ankles provide just as much support as the feet do, to the entire body. The body relies heavily on the ankles for support when walking, running, or anything that involves being up on the feet. With the ankles being so important to the body, sometimes they experience their own problems.

Knowing what common issues the ankles can experience is good to know so that people can try and prevent any issues in the future. It’s also beneficial to know what issues the ankles may run into so that people can be prepared for them. Today, we will go over the most ankle common issues.

COMMON ANKLE ISSUES

ANKLE SPRAINS

Ankle sprains are common and can be painful! Damage is caused to the outside of the ankle on the exterior ligaments. The ligament may have a partial or complete tear which are both considered a sprain. Ankle sprains are typically caused by a twisting motion of the ankle in an unnatural form causing severe discomfort. When a person sprains their ankle, the ligaments become weak affecting how well a person can stand.

ACHILLES TENDINITIS

Achilles tendinitis typically occurs when the Achilles area is being overused. The tendon becomes weak over time because it so exposed. Because of the high exposure, it is often cool which means the elasticity of the tendon is lessened and the blood flow to them also limit it. Achilles tendinitis is common because not enough people know blood flows needs to be increased to it.

ARTHRITIS

Osteochondritis dissecans is an arthritis that makes the ankle feel stiff or tight. This typically occurs after a sprain occurs, or when the ankle is twisted unnaturally. It is also common that arthritis affects people that may be aging. In this case, the cartilage has experienced wear and tear over time. There might be pain and swelling and also some stiffness.

FRACTURES

Ankle fractures have become more and more common over time. The ankle has two joints and when one part of the ankle is damaged, it often affects the surrounding areas. A fracture in the ankle can occur if there is an increase in physical activities using the ankles and feet or if a heavy object is dropped on or near it.

Ankle issues can be very painful and costly. Being aware of what the most common issues are can be beneficial to a person who is aging or to someone who wants to avoid any issues with their ankles in the future.
